Perfect Star was looking for the right tools to provide customers with fast and efficient electrical services to make their expansion a success. From HVAC to electrification leaders

Perfect Star has built a strong reputation for its customer-first approach to HVAC, backed by over 30 years of experience and nearly 30,000 positive reviews. The company has been named “The Best Heating & Air Company” and “The Most Community-Minded Company” by The Press and recognized as SFGATE’s Best of the Bay Area Heating & A/C Service provider. But as demand for energy upgrades grew, Perfect Star saw an opportunity to better serve its customers. The team began building a full-service electrical division designed to meet the moment and serve the future. Amy Tilley, Perfect Star’s Marketing Coordinator, and Gustavo Martinez, Head of the Electrical Division, helped shape that growth from the inside. Together, they’ve helped the company launch new offerings, establish new workflows, and adopt tools that align with where the market is headed.

“I think it does say a lot about company culture to be able to have the best tools for the team,” Amy said.

Rather than treat electrical work as a separate add-on, the team made it a core part of their strategy—actively hiring new team members, cross-training HVAC techs, and adopting tools to streamline assessments and permitting. They doubled down on training and equipping their team, and the strategy has been paying off. Discovered in a pinch and used ever since

Gustavo still remembers the moment he discovered Kopperfield. An inspector was already on-site, and one of Perfect Star’s electricians needed a load calculation to get final approval. With no time to lose, Gustavo started searching online for a fast solution. That’s when he found Kopperfield. He jumped in, ran the calc in minutes, and emailed it to the tech, who got the green light on the spot. “That’s when we knew,” he said. “This tool just works.” After that inspection, Gustavo spoke with his supervisor to get Kopperfield approved for wider use:

“We got to get this,” he said. “This is going to make our life so much easier. We have to get it.”

Shortly after that inspection, Kopperfield was rolled out to every estimator at Perfect Star. They use the Kopperfield mobile app on-site to complete load calcs, send polished PDFs to customers, and upload results to ServiceTitan for tracking and internal quality assurance. The mobile-first design means they can do it all from the field with no need to go back to the office or dig through files.

Before adopting Kopperfield, the team handled load calculations manually — using paper worksheets, calculators, and spreadsheets. It worked, but it was inconsistent and ate up valuable time on every job.

“Before we used to do all the math and we used to do it all by hand,” Gustavo said. “With Kopperfield, within minutes everything was done. It was really good.“

The shift to Kopperfield didn’t just save time, but brought consistency to the team’s process. Load calcs that once felt like a bottleneck became a fast, repeatable step in the workflow, freeing up time for more strategic work.

“We want to be able to book all this business, but we need to be as efficient with our time as possible to be able to book as many jobs as possible,” Amy explained. “That extra 20 minutes of doing it by hand at every single job, that can certainly add up throughout the day.”

It’s now standard operating procedure and a key part of Perfect Star’s growth strategy.

A tool that builds trust and closes deals

As Amy noted, the value of Kopperfield isn’t just efficiency, it’s also transparency.

“In terms of sales conversion from a customer standpoint, the tool provides a transparency factor. It’s not make believe when the customer sees the results on paper with the load calculation. That’s something a customer can really trust.”

That trust is critical, especially in a state like California, where many customers are well-informed and often cautious when it comes to electrical upgrades. “It really arms the customer with the knowledge to make a really thoughtful decision on what they need to do and what the capabilities they have are,” Amy said. “I like the integrity and transparency and accuracy that it affords.”

That not only builds credibility, but also helps move projects forward. Whether it’s a panel upgrade, EV charger install, or a full home rewiring, Perfect Star is more equipped to win the job.

Cross-trained and confident in the field

With Kopperfield, Perfect Star has also improved coordination between their HVAC and electrical teams. HVAC technicians are now trained to identify potential electrical issues during routine service visits and  loop in the electrical team when needed. This cross-team communication has made it easier to catch problems early and respond faster in the field.

Perfect Star is also extending this proactive communication to their customers. With thousands of homeowners enrolled in their annual maintenance plans, Perfect Star has started offering load calculations and electrical assessments as part of routine visits. This adds immediate value for customers and helps surface opportunities for upgrades like panel replacements or EV charger installations.

“Our hope is that at some point in the next year we can provide electrical load calculations for all of those members,” Amy explained. “That would be magnificent — and even if just 10% of them convert, we can pass those leads to Gustavo’s team.”

That kind of cross-functional collaboration is also boosting internal morale.

“It’s good for work culture to cross-train your team,” said Amy. “Giving them a new skill set that they did not have before, that makes people feel good and feel confident going into different situations.”

With the right tools and the right team in place, Perfect Star is delivering a more complete experience to customers, while building a more confident, capable workforce along the way.
