4 key considerations for home EV charging

As the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to grow, home EV charging stations have become a popular investment for EV owners. In this article, we'll explore four key considerations that every EV owner should take into account when selecting a home EV charging station, including charging speed, operating costs, your home's electrical capacity, and your (current and future) car's amperage. These main points can help you make a more informed purchase decision and set yourself up for happy at-home charging for years to come.

1. Charging speed - If you’re a daily commuter, getting a full charge fast is key. Level 2 chargers recharge EVs four to thirteen times faster than Level 1 chargers, depending on the charger and car model. For example, the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 48A touts 8x faster charging than the average Level 1 charger.

2. Operating costs - Many chargers offer smart charging software that allows them to pull power when electricity rates are lower, saving you money on your energy bill. Also, many utility providers offer “time-of-use” or “TOU” rates to homeowners with EV chargers.

3. Your home's electrical capacity - Some homes, especially older ones, have limited electrical capacity and may not be able to support the dedicated 240-volt circuit needed for a Level 2 charger. If you have an older home and aren’t sure of the electrical capacity, here are some tips on when to replace your electrical panel.

4. Your (current and future) car's amperage - Another factor to consider is how many amps your EV's battery needs for optimal performance. On average, most EVs need around 32 amps for a full overnight charge, equalling to around 25 miles of added “range” per hour of charging. If you plan to buy another car in the future, it can be helpful to compare charging speeds with your current EV and consider adding another home EV charger depending on your driving needs.
