Kopperfield AI
The assistant in your dashboard: what it does, reviewing its changes, and your data.
Kopperfield AI is in beta. It's designed to help you make changes to the document you have open, research NEC questions, and find your documents. Please check its work before you save or submit anything.
If you don't see it, it hasn't been turned on for your shop yet.
Open Kopperfield AI
- In your dashboard: on Documents or a load calculation, panel schedule, single line diagram or fault current page, click the sparkle button marked Beta in the bottom-right corner. On a wide screen it docks beside your work.
- On the mobile app: go to Tools, then Kopperfield AI. On a load calculation, panel schedule or fault current calculation, Ask Kopperfield AI opens it with that document.
- For code questions: the NEC chatbot in the left menu is the same assistant, in its own conversation. Pick the edition from the Code year menu next to send.
What it can do, by tool
- Load calculator: add, change or remove lines ("add a 50 A heat pump", "remove the items with zero quantity"), or read a panel photo and add what is on it. The calculation itself is fixed formulas written from the code; Kopperfield AI never does the math.
- Panel schedule: fill in breakers from a description or a photo of the panel, and add, change or remove breakers and circuit labels.
- Single line diagram: add and connect equipment, label it, and fill the title block from the job.
- Fault current calculator: set up the source, the points in the system and the wire runs between them from what you tell it.
- Jobs and site captures: create a job, file documents and photos under it, add a comment, or schedule a visit. Type
@to point it at a job. - Photos: attach a photo of a panel or a nameplate and ask what is on it.
- Voice: with the message box empty, click the microphone, talk, then click stop to send.
- Email: send a document's PDF, but only to an address you typed in the chat.
- Finding documents: "Find the panel schedules for 412 Oak St", "What did we create this week?", "Summarize this calculation." It isn't able to filter load calcs by total yet, like "over 200 A".
- How the app works: "How do I invite my foreman?", "Where did my diagram go?"
It never deletes anything. To delete a document, use that document's own menu. It does not create documents either: start a new one with New on its list, then ask Kopperfield AI to fill it in. See What Kopperfield AI can do, with examples.
Review its changes
- In an editor, every row Kopperfield AI added or changed is marked with a small teal dot until you save. Your own edits are not marked.
- Read the marked rows, then press Save to keep them. Leave the editor without saving, or reload, to throw them away.
- Changes it makes to a saved document outside the editor are saved as a new version. Open the document's Version history to see what changed or restore an earlier version, or ask Kopperfield AI to go back to the previous one.
- When it makes an assumption, for example counting a heat pump as both heating and cooling, it says so. Check it before you save.
Check code answers with your AHJ
Kopperfield AI gives information, not certification. It is a second set of eyes, not a licensed electrician, and it can be wrong. It is not your AHJ and is not affiliated with NFPA.
- You are responsible for every calculation, schedule and diagram you sign or submit.
- When using the NEC chatbot, you should always double check with your own copy of the NEC. Kopperfield AI cites the sections it relied on and may quote a few words, but never the full text, so you'll want to look each one up and read it.
- Specific questions work best. For example, instead of "Do I need GFCI in a kitchen?", try "Single-family kitchen remodel: which countertop and dishwasher receptacles need GFCI?"
- Your jurisdiction may have adopted a different edition or local amendments. When in doubt, confirm with your AHJ.
Your data
- Your messages, the documents it reads to answer you, and the photos you attach are sent to Anthropic, which runs the AI model. Voice messages are sent to OpenAI to be turned into text. Panel photos you ask it to read are sent to Google. Web searches send the search words, not your documents.
- These providers process your content to answer you. Anthropic and OpenAI do not train their models on what is sent through their business APIs.
- Your conversations are kept with your account so you can come back to them. Our team may review them to fix problems and improve answers.
- Photos you attach but never send are deleted after a day. Voice recordings are deleted after a while; the words you said are kept in the conversation.
- See our Privacy Policy, §8 for how we share information with service providers.
Usage limits
Kopperfield AI has limits on how much one person or one shop can use it, how many emails it sends, and how many photos and voice messages you can upload. They are there to keep the assistant fast and available for everyone and to stop misuse, and normal use does not come near them. If you reach one, Kopperfield AI tells you. Each answer also has a time and step budget; if one stops before it finishes, ask again with a narrower request. If you need more, email support@kopperfield.com.
What Kopperfield AI can do, with examples
Kopperfield AI helps you edit the document you are looking at. Open a load calculation, panel schedule, single line diagram or fault current calculation, then tell it what to change in plain words. It also answers questions about your jobs and documents, and code questions with references.
Start with the document open
- Open the document first. Kopperfield AI changes only the document on your screen. Ask about another one and it offers to open it, or tells you where to find it.
- It does not create documents. Start a new one yourself with New on that document's list, for example Load calculations, then New. Once it is open, give Kopperfield AI the details and it fills them in.
- In an editor, you keep the last word. Its changes are marked until you press Save. Leave without saving to throw them away.
- On a document's page (outside the editor), its changes are saved as a new version, which you can restore from Version history.
Load calculator
With a load calculation open:
- "Set the square footage to 2,400."
- "Add a 48 A EV charger and an electric range."
- "Set the dryer quantity to 2 and remove the dishwasher."
- "Add a gas furnace and a 3-ton heat pump." It uses the matching library rows and tells you any size it assumed.
- "Read this panel photo and add what's on it." Attach the photo first.
- "Check this calculation against the NEC."
- "What does this calculation come to?" It reads the total and service size from the calculation on your screen.
The calculation is done by the load calculator's own formulas, never by the AI. The totals are on the calculation and its PDF. Kopperfield AI reads them only from the calculation you have open, so it cannot yet compare calculations or find ones by size, such as "my calcs over 200 A".
Panel schedule
With a panel schedule open:
- "Put 20 A single-pole breakers on 5, 7 and 9, labelled Kitchen lights."
- "Add a 2-pole 50 A breaker on 1 and 3 for the range."
- "Set this panel to 42 spaces with a 200 A main breaker, 120/240V single phase."
- "Relabel circuit 12 as Garage receptacles."
- "Fill in the breakers from this panel photo."
Circuit numbers are the ones printed on the schedule: odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right.
Single line diagram
In the diagram editor:
- "Add a utility meter, a 200 A main breaker and a panel labelled MDP, and connect them."
- "Move the meter above the main breaker."
- "Fill the title block from the job."
On a diagram's page, it can restore an earlier version: "Go back to the previous version."
Fault current calculator
With a fault current calculation open:
- "The utility transformer is 75 kVA at 2.1% impedance."
- "Add a 100 ft run of 3/0 copper from the meter to the main panel."
- "What is the available fault current at the main panel?"
Jobs and site captures
- "Create a job for Maria Lopez at 412 Oak St, Salem, OR." It shows matching addresses on a card; pick the right one.
- "Change the unit on the Lopez job to Apt 4." It shows the full address on a card to confirm.
- "File this load calculation under the Lopez job."
- "Schedule a visit on the Lopez job for Tuesday at 9 AM."
- Type
@to point it at a job: "Add a comment on @Lopez: permit submitted."
Questions
- Your work: "Which jobs have no one assigned?", "Find the panel schedules for 412 Oak St", "What did we file this week?"
- The code: "Does a kitchen countertop receptacle need GFCI protection under NEC 2023?" It answers from its research, cites the sections, and tells you which edition it used. Check the answer in your codebook and with your AHJ.
- The app: "How do I invite my foreman?", "Where did my diagram go?" It answers from this help center and links the article.
What it leaves to you
- Creating, copying and deleting documents. Use New on a document's list, and Delete in a document's ⋯ menu.
- How Kopperfield works out a figure. For questions about how the calculator computes something, or what one of its fields means, Kopperfield AI offers to contact support so the team can answer.
- Sizing decisions. It can point you to the code and give an estimate labelled as one, but the size you install is your call and your AHJ's.
- Email to someone new. It only emails a document to an address you typed in the chat.
Tips
- Give the numbers you know: amps, volts, quantities, circuit numbers. When it has to assume one, it says so.
- Read the marked rows before you save.
- If a request is large, break it into a few smaller ones.
Frequently asked questions
Can Kopperfield AI change a document I don't have open?
No. It reads everything in your shop, but it only changes the document you have open. The exception is filing documents under a job.
Can it create a new load calculation or panel schedule for me?
No. Start it yourself with New on that document's list. Once it is open, tell Kopperfield AI what you need, for example "Standard method, 2,000 sq ft single family dwelling", and it fills it in.
Why didn't my change stick?
Changes in an editor are kept only when you press Save. If you left or reloaded the page first, ask again and save.
Can it size my conductors or breakers?
It points you to the code sections and checks what you entered against them, but the sizing decision is yours. Confirm it with your AHJ.
Does it send emails on its own?
No. It only emails a document to an address you typed in the conversation.
Who can I contact about Kopperfield AI?
Email support@kopperfield.com, or ask Kopperfield AI to contact support for you. It sends the team your conversation so you don't have to explain it again.
